SIMPLE MACHINES LAB

the struggle was real...

In science class we have been learning about machines and how they operate. A simple machine is something that is not complex and is useful to us. This lab that we had done was to replicate simple machines that is useful to us out of the materials we were given. The simple machines that we had to make were a lever, a wheel and axel, a pulley, an incline plane and a screw.

LEVER

This simple machine was built with 2 wooden circle plates, a glue stick, tape, and plastic string. It operates by putting something that has mass on both wooden plates. In the picture the metal weight was put on the right and the wooden cylinder was put on the left. Because the metal weight had more mass it was brought down toward the table because of the amount of gravitational force acting upon it and the wooden cylinder was brought up because it didn't have the same mass, or gravitation force, as the metal weight to keep the board  leveled and it wasn't heavy enough to bring the metal weight up. A lever could be used to measure the weight of something almost like a triple beam balance.

WHEEL & AXEL

This simple machine was built with 2 wooden cylinders, 2 toothpicks, tape, and 2 long/thick sticks. What this does is, if you push it the wooden cylinders would rotate and it will start to move. This replicates a car because of how the wheels would make the car move.

PULLEY

This simple machine was made with almost everything we were given and it required much more time and effort. We had taken basically the wheel and axel but added more things to it to make it lift up something that had mass, and because we used wooden sticks to construct the pulley and many layers of tape we weren't able to lift anything that heavy like the metal weight. Instead we were able to lift up something that weighed less and that was the ear plug. whenever we pulled the green string the wheels of the pulley would rotate and the string would roll into the wooden cylinder. That would make the ear plug lift up more. This simple machine resembles a machine that is used to work out where you pull on a handle and weights would come up and it is used to strengthen your biceps, but there are also other workout machines that do the same.

INCLINE PLANE

This simple machine was built with multiple sticks and toothpicks. We had also used tape to stick them together in order to make a stronger and thicker incline plane. We then added a wooden cylinder and taped it to the bottom of the incline plane in order to elevate it. The purpose of this machine was that if we were to slide the metal weight over the incline plane then it would resemble how people could bring heavy things up stairs where you don't need to carry it but just push the object which is easier then carrying them because you could strain some parts of your body which is not good for your health.

WEDGE

This simple machine is made by 2 large sticks, one toothpick, and tape. A wedge could be used to hold something in place for example if you needed to make something stay still you would place this underneath so it wouldn't move.

SCREW

This simple machine was made with plastic string, a toothpick, and tape. to make it seem like it was a screw we had stick it into one of the wooden cylinders. A real screw helps us with putting stuff together and fixing things that we use in our daily lives. A screw is one of those basic tools that we'll always need.
